There are some general guidelines you should follow when hanging your art.
1. Make sure the artwork fills up 2/3 of the space. For example, if you are hanging a piece of art above your mantel, the size should fill about 2/3 of the mantel width. Check out this picture, see how the size and scale of this art doesn't work with this sofa and huge wall? It is also hung way too high.

Take a look at this after photo below. We hung the same artwork over the grand piano instead. The size and scale work so much better with the piano, which had also been moved to a more prominent location.
2. The center of your artwork should be somewhere between 56" to 60" from the floor.
3. Or hang your artwork about 4" to 6" above the top of the piece of furniture. For example, if you are placing art above the sofa, the bottom of the frame should be about 4" to 6" above the top of the sofa. Here is an after photo of the revised mantel. We hung it 5" above the top of the mantel vs. the way it was before.
If you follow these general guidelines, you should be in good shape. Now, keep in mind, that these are guidelines and they may need to be broken every now and then.
